For this kid, the routine on the ropes that had sapped so many others was like leaving the candy shop unattended. Ali tried the only con, crying "Hit me, hit me." And Spinks obliged again and again. He built his lead, one round, two rounds, bigger and bigger. Spinks had said that this fight was like any other and that Ali was like any other opponent, and that's the way he treated the situation from the beginning. His brother, Michael, grabbed him, and together they laughed like a couple of kids without a care in the world. ![]()
